Southeast Hospital College of Nursing and Health Sciences Financial Aid Office is here to assist students with the many processes involved with applying various types of aid to help pay for their post-secondary education.

Financial aid may consist of one or more of the following available from various federal, state, and private sources:

  • Grants
  • Scholarships
  • Loans

Financial aid is available to students with or without financial need. Financial aid may be available to students based on many factors. The financial aid staff will guide you through the process and look forward to assisting you every step of the way, ensuring that every person has the opportunity to succeed at Southeast Hospital College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)


The primary way most students receive financial aid is to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA should be submitted using our School Code of 030709 as soon after October 1st as possible for the Financial Aid Office to determine eligibility for the various financial aid programs. Students who have applied for aid during the previous year should complete a Renewal FAFSA. The FSA-ID serves as an electronic signature, which significantly improves the processing time. Students and parents of dependent students should request a FSA-ID at the U.S. Department of Education’s website: A paper signature page must be downloaded, signed and mailed for students or parents who don’t have a FSA-ID. A federal customer service telephone helpline is 800-4FED AID (800/433-3243) or 319/337-5665. Students can also contact our office at any time.


Once the FAFSA has been submitted, students will receive a student aid report (SAR). This is a copy of your FAFSA information. The SAR should be reviewed for accuracy and completeness. If the SAR has errors, corrections should be completed at the U.S. Department of Education’s FAFSA web site. If a financial aid application has been filed, but Southeast Hospital College of Nursing and Health Sciences was not listed as a school choice, the student will need to update their FAFSA to include Southeast Missouri Hospital College of Nursing and Health Sciences Federal School Code: 030709. When a correct SAR is received, it should be retained by the student. Southeast Hospital College of Nursing and Health Sciences Financial Aid Office receives SAR information electronically, so it is not necessary for a paper SAR to be submitted to the Financial Aid Office. Eligibility for Federal Financial Aid


  • Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or an Eligible Non-citizen (see below).
  • Be registered for Selective Service (male students, ages 18-25)
  • Have a High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) High School Equivalency Diploma.
  • Be working towards a degree or certificate.
  • May not be in default on any federal educational loans or owe a refund on a federal grant.
  • Be making Satisfactory Academic Progress.
  • Not have been convicted of a drug offense while receiving financial aid.


You are considered a citizen or eligible non-citizen if you fit into one of the following categories:

  • You are a U.S. Citizen.
  • You are a U.S. National (includes natives of America, Samoa, or Swain's Island).
  • You are a U.S. Permanent resident with an Alien Registration Receipt Card
  • (I-151,I-551, or I-551C).
  • You are not a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen, but have an I-94 or I-94A with one of the following designations: Refugee, Asylum Granted, Indefinite Parole, Humanitarian Parole, Cuban-Haitian entrant, status pending, Conditional entrant (valid only if issued before April 1, 1980)


Students should first submit the FAFSA to be evaluated for the need-based programs. The Department of Education determines eligibility for need-based financial aid using submitted FAFSA application information in a standard need analysis formula.

Financial Need can be defined as the Cost of Attendance (COA) minus the Expected Family Contribution (EFC).

Cost of Attendance - Expected Family Contribution = Financial Need

Cost of Attendance (COA) is a calculation of expected expenses during the time you are enrolled. COA includes allowances for tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, transportation and other personal expenses. Although some of these costs will be paid directly to the College (tuition and fees) most are considered indirect costs and the responsibility of the student.

Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is calculated from the information you report on the FAFSA. EFC is a measure of a student’s and his/her family’s financial strength and resources and is used to determine amounts and types of aid available.

Once Financial Need is determined, federal, and state private grant and scholarships are awarded, followed by Federal Direct Stafford Loans. Following determination of need-based aid, non-need based aid such as Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans or Parent PLUS loans is awarded. Students that do not have need-based aid can still receive non-need based aid.


What is Verification?

Often, FAFSA records are selected to be verified by the Department of Education and the College. This process requires that the College collect various tax documents to verify data submitted on the FAFSA. A financial aid record is not considered complete and eligible for aid disbursement until verification has been completed. Because the College participates in Federal Student Aid programs, by law we are required to verify designated files.

Why was I selected?

Most files are chosen by the Central Processing System (CPS) at the Department of Education. Although most files are chosen at random, some files may be chosen based on areas commonly completed with mistakes. Just remember we are here to help--most errors found result in additional aid eligibility for the student.

Selecting Students

The College will request verification information from all students who are selected for verification. Required verification items often consist of:

  1. Household size as defined by the Federal Department of Education.
  2. Number in college
  3. Adjusted gross income as supplied by the IRS
  4. U.S. taxes paid
  5. Certain types of untaxed income and benefits (examples not all inclusive: Child Care, IRA/Keogh deductions, Interest on tax-free bonds)
  6. All other untaxed income included on the U.S. income tax return (excluding schedules).

The College is also required to verify any application information that appears to be incorrect or contains discrepancies.


Students who are selected for verification will be notified through their school e-mail address. Please be sure to provide all requested documentation in a timely manner. Remember, financial aid cannot be awarded until this process has been completed.


Students must complete all required paperwork at least two weeks prior to the end of each semester to be eligible to receive aid for that semester. Paperwork submitted after this deadline will be processed at the discretion of the College.

Award Notification

Once your FAFSA results and all requested information has been received and processed, you will be notified via email that you have an Award Letter. The Award Letter will reflect all federal and state offers of aid including scholarship, need based grants, and loans. The Award Letter provides a summary of your financial aid. All or part of the award offered can be accepted. Please contact the Financial Aid Office if you need assistance.

The Award Letter will contain the Cost of Attendance, Expected Family Contribution, as well as information on the awards you have been offered and/or are receiving. Students will need to follow the instructions contained in the Award Letter to accept their aid.

To view your Financial Aid Award letter after you have received your email stating it is ready for you to view, follow these steps:

  1. Access SONIS at
  2. Log on using your User ID and Password;
  3. Click on “Financial” on the left side in the blue column to open dropdowns “Semester Billing” and “Ledger”
  4. Click on Semester Billing
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the Semester Billing webpage to find the Award Letter Button
  6. Click on the Award Letter button
  7. Carefully Read Award Letter
  8. Print copy of Award Letter
  9. Sign and submit signed Award Letter to Financial Aid Office

If you are accepting a Federal Direct Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loan and are a first time borrower, you must have a Direct Loan Master Promissory note (MPN) on file and complete Entrance Loan Counseling before any financial aid is able to be disbursed. The Direct Loan MPN and the Entrance Loan Counseling web site is You will need to use your Department of Education FSA-ID for both the MPN and Entrance Loan Counseling.

Southeast Hospital College of Nursing and Health Sciences offers a comprehensive program of financial assistance for students needing supplemental financial support for their educational expenses. To apply for federal and state need-based aid, a student must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at

Federal Grants

  • The Federal Pell Grant is a need-based grant available through the U.S. Department of Education. To apply, students need to complete the FAFSA. Eligibility is based on the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and enrollment status. Award amounts are prorated for less than full-time enrollment. Awards range from $6095-$652 for the 2018-2019 Academic Year.
  • A Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is a grant for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. To receive FSEOG, you must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. FSEOG does not typically need to be repaid. Eligible students must have need, be enrolled full-time, not have a bachelor's degree, and be making Satisfactory Academic Progress. 

Federal Work Study

Federal Work-Study provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to the student's course of study. 

State Grants

The Missouri Department of Higher Education (MDHE) provides a variety of financial assistance programs to help students and their families pay for college. These are grants that do not have to be repaid. Students must be Missouri residents and be making Satisfactory Academic Progress, as defined by Southeast Hospital College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

  • Access Missouri Financial Assistance Program—need-based grant program awarded to undergraduate students who file a FAFSA prior to February 1, have an EFC less than $12,000, and are full-time. Annual awards are determined by MDHE but can range from $1,000-$2,850.
  • Bright Flight Program—students must score a 31 on their ACT and be enrolled full-time. Awards up to $3,000.

Federal Loans

Federal Stafford Loans are available to students through the U.S. Department of Education. Students interested in obtaining loans to assist with education costs, should apply through the FAFSA. Students must be enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) to be eligible. Students must also complete Entrance Counseling and a Master Promissory Note (MPN) prior to receiving funds. These are loan funds and must be repaid. Eligibility varies.

  • Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan—need-based loan program where the Department of Education pays the interest for you while you are enrolled at least part-time.
  • Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan—loan program available to all students regardless of need. Interest on this loan will start to incur once the student receives loan funds. The student may choose to make interest payments while in school or defer (and accumulate) the interest until repayment.

Missouri Nurse Loan Program

Loan program available through the Missouri Department of Health. To apply, please visit: Eligible students may receive up to $5,000.

Parent PLUS Loans

Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)—loans available to parents of dependent students. To apply, students will need to file a FAFSA. This is a loan that must be repaid. Parents interested in the Parent PLUS loan may apply at

Alternative (Private) Education Loans

Private loans are available for students who need additional aid. A separate application is required. Generally, student must have a co-signer with a good credit history. Alternative loans are funded by banks, credit unions, and other private lending institutions. Students who need additional funds to pay educational costs, and who have exhausted their federal Direct Loan eligibility and other funding resources, may consider borrowing an alternative (private) education loan. This option should be carefully considered.

Federal Direct Loans, grants, and scholarships are directly applied to the student’s account. Any remaining balance due is the responsibility of the student and the student is required to make payment arrangements with the Billing Office. Students that have a credit balance will receive a refund check. For more information on Refund disbursements see below.


Financial Aid disbursements are tentatively scheduled for the first full-week of full semester classes for the fall and spring semesters and after July 1 for the summer semester. However, disbursements could be delayed due to specific program requirements or corresponding documents that have not been received, reviewed and/or processed by the Financial Aid Office. Contact the financial aid office to determine your disbursement date.


The award letter will indicate what type of grants, scholarships, and/or loans a student is eligible to have disbursed each semester. See Award Notification tab for further information.


If a credit balance exists after all financial aid has been disbursed and all charges have been applied, a student is entitled to a refund. Typically this refund will be processed within 14 days of the date the funds were applied to the students account. The Billing Office will email the student when the refund check is available for pick-up.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

Students receiving Federal Student Aid (and most state aid) must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) towards their degree. The three components of SAP include:

  1. Cumulative GPA >2.0
  2. Complete 66.67% of cumulative courses attempted
  3. Complete degree within 150% of the published course length.

Students not meeting any one of the above criteria will be placed on a Financial Aid Warning semester. During the Financial Aid Warning semester the student will be eligible to continue to receive aid. Students who fail to meet SAP standards following their Financial Aid Warning semester will be placed on Financial Aid Suspension for future semesters and will be ineligible to receive Federal or most State Aid.

Return of Title IV Funds (R2T4) Policy

The Financial Aid Office, in accordance with Federal regulations, will perform a Return of Title IV Funds (R2T4) on any Title IV recipient who withdraws from the College during a payment period in which the student began attendance. Aid will be calculated based on the number of days of the term completed by the student divided by the total number of days in the term. As a result of this calculation, students may be responsible to repay aid already received. Students will be notified within 45 days. For our full policy, please click here

Veterans Checklist

Veterans who wish to use VA benefits while at Southeast Missouri Hospital College of Nursing and Health Sciences will need to provide additional information to the financial aid office.

Veterans Administration Educational Benefits

Veterans using their educational benefits must first apply through the Veterans Administration. Once the Certificate of Eligibility has been received, a copy will need to be submitted to the financial aid office.

Documentation of Military Service

The College will request documentation or your military service. A copy of your DD-214, a copy of your military ID, or other acceptable document will need to be provided. A copy of your Military Records, including a DD-214, can be obtained at

  • You must first "Request your OMPF Information" then within 24 hours the information will be available

Veterans Services recommends that all student veterans apply for financial aid by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Your recent separation/deployment may have earned you the right to receive federal grants to assist you financially while you are pursuing your career goals through higher education. Special Circumstance

On a case-by-case basis, the financial aid office may review family changes after the FAFSA has been submitted with the previous year’s information. If a major change occurs in your financial situation, you may submit an appeal for our office to review your situation. Examples include:

  • Parent(s) or student recently unemployed
  • Parent(s) or student is receiving less pay
  • Parents or student has become separated or divorced
  • Death of parent or student’s spouse
  • Medical and dental expenses not covered by insurance
  • Private elementary or secondary school expenses
  • Unemployment benefits or untaxed income no longer received
  • IRA and 401K withdrawals
  • Other changes to a student’s status or to a student’s or family’s income or assets
